According to a comprehensive report released on Wednesday, the current El Niño phenomenon is exhibiting signs of extreme intensity, threatening to plunge an additional 49 million people into severe food insecurity by the end of the upcoming year.
Climate scientists and WFP analysts indicate that there is an 81% probability that this cycle will develop into a "very strong" event. Data reveals that sea surface temperatures in the Pacific have surged to levels not seen since 1982, with the possibility that the current intensity could be the most severe recorded since 1950. This thermal anomaly in the ocean triggers a domino effect across global atmospheric patterns, fundamentally altering rainfall and temperature distributions across multiple continents.
The human cost of this meteorological shift is expected to be disproportionately borne by the world's most vulnerable populations. The WFP projects that in 45 of the most fragile nations, the number of people facing acute food shortages could swell by 22%, potentially bringing the total to 274 million individuals. The regional disparities in impact are particularly alarming; Central America and Southern Africa are predicted to be the hardest hit, with food insecurity likely to rise by 83% and nearly 75% respectively. Furthermore, the Caribbean and South America are each expected to see over 12 million additional people falling into the grip of hunger.
From a meteorological perspective, the El Niño effect manifests as a series of volatile weather extremes. Southern Africa is bracing for devastating droughts that could decimate livestock and crop yields. In Asia, the stability of the monsoon—the lifeblood of regional agriculture—is under threat, with expectations of delayed onset and erratic patterns. Meanwhile, regions such as East Africa, the Sahel, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean are facing a critical deficit in rainfall. Conversely, South and Southeast Asia may struggle with a chaotic mix of drought and localized flooding, creating an unstable environment for food production and distribution.
These environmental shocks do not occur in a vacuum. They exacerbate existing vulnerabilities, such as economic instability and political fragility, turning a climate event into a systemic food crisis. The volatility of crop yields leads to price spikes in local markets, making basic nutrition unaffordable for the poorest households.
In response to this imminent threat, the WFP is urgently calling for an expansion of early warning systems and proactive humanitarian assistance. The organization emphasizes the importance of "anticipatory action"—providing aid before the crisis reaches its peak rather than reacting after the famine begins. While current efforts have already reached 18 countries and provided cash and material support to over 1.3 million people this year, the scale of the predicted El Niño event suggests that these measures are only a fraction of what is required.
