Pentagon Accelerates Development of 'Golden Dome' Space-Based Missile Defense Shield

The United States is aggressively pushing the boundaries of orbital security as the Pentagon prepares to initiate the first phase of testing for its highly ambitious "Golden Dome" space-based missile defense system. According to sources familiar with the project, the U.S. military aims to conduct initial ground-based evaluations before the end of the current calendar year, marking a critical milestone in the deployment of a planetary shield designed to neutralize advanced ballistic threats.
This strategic initiative has gained significant momentum following a series of high-profile contracts signed in April. The U.S. Space Force has partnered with a consortium of 12 private aerospace and defense companies—most notably SpaceX and Lockheed Martin—to engineer the interceptors that will form the backbone of the Golden Dome. Provided the system passes these final hurdles, the Space Force intends to begin full-scale procurement from the winning development teams starting in 2030.
The architectural vision for the Golden Dome was formally outlined in May 2025 by President Trump. However, the project is not without significant controversy, particularly regarding its staggering financial requirements. While the White House initially estimated the total cost of the system at $175 billion, subsequent updates from the Pentagon have revised that figure upward to $185 billion. These numbers, however, appear conservative compared to independent analyses. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and other independent fiscal watchdogs have warned that the long-term maintenance, deployment, and operational costs over a 20-year horizon could balloon to as much as $1.2 trillion.
