## South Korea's Medical Sector Hits Historic Milestone with Over 2 Million Foreign Visitors

South Korea has solidified its position as a global hub for healthcare and aesthetic medicine, recording a historic surge in international patients. According to the latest data released by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, the number of foreign nationals seeking medical services in the country surpassed 2 million last year, totaling 2,011,822 visitors. This figure represents a staggering year-on-year increase of 71.9%, signaling a robust recovery and expansion of the nation's medical tourism sector.

### Regional Demographics and Patient Distribution

A detailed analysis of the patient demographics reveals a strong concentration of visitors from neighboring East Asian countries. Mainland China emerged as the largest group of medical tourists, accounting for 618,973 visits, or approximately 30.8% of the total. Japan followed closely behind with 600,000 patients, representing 29.8% of the total volume. Other significant contributors included Taiwan, with over 180,000 visitors (9.2%), and the United States, which contributed over 170,000 patients (8.6%).

The preference for specific medical specialties varied by nationality. In the field of dermatology, Chinese patients led the way with nearly 460,000 visits, followed by Japanese patients at nearly 400,000. Conversely, the plastic surgery sector saw a higher proportion of Japanese patients, who made up 42% of the total for that specialty, while Chinese patients accounted for 24.5%.

### Economic Impact and Spending Trends

The influx of international patients has translated into substantial economic gains for the South Korean economy. Data from the Korea Tourism Organization indicates that medical consumption by foreigners reached 213.079 billion won in July alone, marking a 66.5% increase compared to the previous year. Notably, the monthly expenditure has remained above the 200 billion won threshold for five consecutive months.

When examining the spending patterns by region, mainland China remained the top spender, with expenditures reaching approximately 57.7 billion won. The United States followed with 44 billion won, while Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore contributed approximately 28.5 billion, 25.3 billion, and 6.4 billion won, respectively. From a sectoral perspective, dermatology continues to be the primary driver of revenue, accounting for 54.9% of total spending, followed by plastic surgery at 19.3% and pharmacy services at 12.7%.

### Evolution of Medical Tourism

Industry experts have noted that the growth rate of foreign patients visiting for medical reasons has significantly outpaced the growth rate of general foreign tourists. This suggests that South Korea's medical reputation is acting as a primary catalyst for travel. While the trend for visitors from China and Japan remains heavily skewed toward cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, there is an emerging trend among patients from other Asian nations who are traveling to South Korea for complex disease treatment and specialized medical care. This diversification indicates that the country is evolving from a center of "K-Beauty" into a comprehensive destination for high-end global healthcare.
