The central region of Japan is currently battling an unprecedented surge in temperature, with Gifu Prefecture emerging as the epicenter of a historic heatwave. On Friday, July 24, meteorological stations in Mino City recorded a blistering 40 degrees Celsius, marking the fourth consecutive day that the region has experienced what the Japan Meteorological Agency now classifies as an "Extremely Hot Day." This rare streak ties a historical record previously set during a period in August 2013 and another interval between July and August 2025, signaling a worrying trend in the archipelago's climate patterns.
The current heat crisis began in earnest on July 21, when temperatures in Gujo City first hit the 40-degree mark, signaling the arrival of the first "Extremely Hot Day" of the year. However, the situation rapidly deteriorated over the following 72 hours, as multiple locations across the country reported temperatures matching or exceeding this critical threshold. The persistence of such extreme heat has put an immense strain on the national healthcare system. According to data released by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, a staggering 10,857 individuals were rushed to emergency medical facilities due to heatstroke in just one week, from July 13 to July 19.
Meteorologists point to a complex atmospheric phenomenon known as a "heat dome" as the primary driver behind this relentless wave of warmth. In a typical summer scenario, hot air over land rises, allowing cooler air to flow in and create a natural circulation pattern that regulates temperature. However, a powerful and stationary high-pressure system has effectively acted as a lid over the Japanese islands. This system traps heat near the surface, causing the region to accumulate warmth much like the interior of a sealed dome stadium.
