AI Disruption: New Census Data Reveals Sharp Decline in Job Prospects and Salaries for Tech Graduates

The long-standing promise of a degree in computer science as a guaranteed ticket to a high-paying career is facing a sudden and severe challenge. According to new research released by the U.S. Census Bureau, the rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence into the workforce has begun to erode the employment prospects and earning potential of recent university graduates, particularly those in technical disciplines.
By analyzing data from approximately 29% of all U.S. bachelor's degree recipients between 2016 and 2024, Census Bureau economists identified a stark pivot in the labor market coinciding with the public launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. The study reveals that for graduates in majors most exposed to AI automation, the probability of securing a first job immediately after graduation fell by five percentage points. Even more concerning is the impact on compensation; those entering these high-risk fields saw their starting salaries plummet by an average of 13%.
To quantify the impact, researchers categorized university majors into ten groups based on their level of exposure to AI. The group most severely affected was dominated by students specializing in computer science, information systems, and software-related fields. For years, these disciplines were the gold standard for upward mobility, but the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) has fundamentally changed the nature of entry-level work. Many tasks traditionally assigned to junior developers—such as basic coding, debugging, and routine documentation—can now be performed more efficiently by AI tools, reducing the demand for human entry-level talent.
The financial fallout for these graduates is significant. The research notes that the current dip in income is comparable to the losses typically seen during severe economic recessions. This downturn has forced a segment of the affected population to pivot away from their chosen careers entirely. Data suggests that some graduates, unable to find roles in the tech sector, have migrated toward lower-paying service industries, including retail and food services, which further drags down the aggregate income statistics for these degree holders.
This shift represents a dramatic reversal of a previous trend. Prior to the AI surge, there was an aggressive influx of students into computer-related fields, a move supported by a labor market that grew fast enough to absorb the increasing number of graduates. However, the equilibrium has shifted. It remains uncertain whether today's graduates will ever be able to catch up to the lifetime earnings of those who entered the workforce before the widespread adoption of generative AI.
The broader economic landscape for young professionals is equally bleak. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York underscores a widening gap in employment stability. As of June, the unemployment rate for recent college graduates stood at 5.7%, a figure that is nearly double the 2.9% unemployment rate observed among the general population of university graduates. This disparity suggests that the struggle is not merely a general economic cooling, but a specific crisis facing those entering the workforce at this particular technological juncture.
