However, the Peruvian Geophysical Institute provided a higher estimate, placing the intensity of the quake at 7.2 magnitude. The epicenter of the quake was pinpointed approximately 35 kilometers north of the city of Colacora, located within the Ayacucho province of the Andes Mountains. In the immediate aftermath, the National Civil Defense Institute began assessing the damage. Guerrero, the head of the agency, informed local media outlets, including Canal N, that preliminary reports indicate at least 22 residential buildings suffered significant structural failure. Beyond private housing, the public sector was also hit hard; approximately six schools and six medical centers were reported as damaged, raising concerns about the availability of healthcare and education in the affected rural zones. Furthermore, the Justice Palace in Cusco—a city known for its historical and administrative importance—sustained visible damage, highlighting the reach of the seismic waves.

Human casualties remained relatively low, though the chaos of the event took a toll. Officials confirmed that two people were injured during the frantic evacuation process, having fallen while attempting to flee their buildings. The anxiety of the population was further compounded approximately three and a half hours after the initial strike, when a significant aftershock with a magnitude of 4.2 hit the Ayacucho region, forcing many residents to remain outdoors in fear of further collapses.

From an economic perspective, Peru's vast mining industry, a cornerstone of the national economy, was closely monitored. The National Society of Mining, Oil, and Energy (SNMPE) released an official statement confirming that they had not received any reports of accidents or operational failures at mining sites. This was a relief for the government, as mining infrastructure in the Andes is often vulnerable to geological shifts.

This disaster arrives at a particularly sensitive time for the region. Only ten days prior, neighboring Colombia was devastated by a powerful earthquake that resulted in the deaths of more than 300 people. The proximity of these two events has sparked renewed discussions among geologists and disaster management experts regarding the current state of seismic activity along the Pacific Ring of Fire, which places both Peru and Colombia at high risk for frequent and intense tectonic movements. Local authorities in Peru are now urging residents to review their emergency protocols and reinforce residential structures to mitigate the impact of future inevitable tremors.
