Reports indicate that several victims of high-speed collisions survived the initial impact only to perish in subsequent vehicle fires because they could not find or operate the electronic release mechanisms. This specific safety flaw became the focal point of a petition submitted last November by a Silicon Valley engineer, who urged the NHTSA to enact federal safety standards to mitigate these risks. The petitioner argued that the current lack of standardized manual overrides poses an unacceptable risk to public safety.

Representative Kelly, a Democrat from Illinois, introduced a bill earlier this year that specifically demands new vehicles be equipped with manual door-opening devices. A primary concern of the bill is not only the safety of the passengers but also the ability of emergency first responders to gain access to the vehicle interior during a power outage or system failure, which is often critical during the "golden hour" of emergency rescue.

As the automotive industry continues its rapid transition toward electrification and autonomous features, the tension between futuristic convenience and basic survival remains a key point of contention. The NHTSA's current trajectory suggests a shift back toward prioritizing fail-safe mechanical overrides over purely digital interfaces, ensuring that in the worst-case scenario, a door remains a door, and not a locked barrier.
