The southeastern regions of South Korea have been plunged into a state of emergency following several days of relentless and extreme precipitation. As of early Tuesday morning, the scale of the disaster has become evident, with a mounting toll of casualties and significant structural damage across multiple provinces. According to reports from the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, the relentless downpours have resulted in one confirmed death and four injuries, triggering a wave of over 2,500 emergency reports ranging from inundated roadways to the collapse of urban infrastructure.

The most tragic incident occurred in the early hours of August 17 in the Okpo-dong neighborhood of Geoje City, located in Gyeongsangnam Province. At approximately 4:42 AM, a massive landslide tore through the area, striking a residential complex with devastating force. The sudden movement of earth and debris claimed the life of one resident and left two others injured. The scene in Geoje was described as chaotic, with muddy torrents flooding the streets and several vehicles becoming trapped in the narrow alleys behind residential buildings, rendered immobile by the accumulation of sludge and debris.

Beyond the immediate loss of life, the storm has crippled essential services across the region. The volatility of the weather led to widespread power outages, affecting 4,161 households. While emergency crews have managed to restore electricity to the majority of these homes—roughly 4,026 households—the struggle for basic utilities continues in other sectors. The water supply system has been severely compromised, particularly in Tongyeong and Geoje, where approximately 1,000 and 4,177 households, respectively, have been left without running water. Local authorities are currently working around the clock to repair ruptured pipes and restore clean water access to the affected populations.

The meteorological data reveals the staggering volume of water that descended upon the region between August 15 and the early hours of August 18. Geoje City bore the brunt of the storm, recording a cumulative rainfall of 95.61 centimeters—nearly a full meter of rain in just a few days. Tongyeong City followed closely with 76.69 centimeters, while Gadeokdo in Busan and Seongsan in Jeju Province recorded 51.8 centimeters and 47.7 centimeters, respectively. Such extreme levels of precipitation quickly saturated the soil, significantly increasing the risk of further landslides and flash floods in mountainous and coastal areas.

In response to the escalating danger, local governments in Busan, Gyeongsangnam Province, and Jeju have coordinated the emergency evacuation of 564 individuals from 318 households. These residents were moved to temporary shelters as their homes were deemed unsafe due to the proximity of unstable slopes or the threat of rising floodwaters. The regional administration continues to monitor the situation closely, as the combination of fallen trees and flooded highways has hampered rescue efforts and restricted movement within the affected cities.

As the region begins the slow process of recovery, the disaster highlights the ongoing vulnerability of South Korea's southeastern coast to extreme weather events. The sheer volume of rain in such a short window has tested the limits of urban drainage systems and slope stabilization efforts, leaving behind a landscape of mud and ruin that will take considerable time and resources to fully remediate.
