Recent vessel tracking data indicates a critical decline in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, with only a single oil tanker recorded passing through the narrow corridor this past Thursday. This marks the lowest level of traffic since early May, signaling a heightened state of alert in one of the world's most vital energy arteries.
For decades, the Persian Gulf has served as the primary exit for Saudi crude. However, the convergence of two distinct security crises—Iranian interference in the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi rebel attacks in the Bab al-Mandab Strait—has rendered these primary paths increasingly perilous. In response to these threats, Riyadh has been compelled to pivot its export strategy, redirecting a significant portion of its oil flow through the Suez Canal to reach international markets.
### The Logistics of a Global Detour
While the Suez Canal has historically been used for some shipments, it has never served as the primary artery for Saudi crude exports on this scale. The shift presents a massive logistical challenge, particularly for Saudi Arabia's primary customer base located in Asia. Under normal circumstances, a tanker departing from Yanbu, a key port on the western coast of the Red Sea, would pass through the Bab al-Mandab Strait to reach Asian ports in approximately 19 days.
With the Red Sea now contested and the Strait of Hormuz unstable, the alternative route is grueling. Vessels must now traverse the Suez Canal, enter the Mediterranean Sea, pass through the Strait of Gibraltar, and circle the entire African continent via the Cape of Good Hope. This redirection extends the voyage time from under three weeks to a staggering 48 days, effectively adding nearly a month to the delivery schedule.
### The Staggering Economic Toll
This logistical nightmare translates into a severe financial burden. The increase in distance leads to a dramatic surge in operational expenses. Shipping data suggests that fuel costs for a single voyage have skyrocketed from roughly $1.26 million to approximately $2.87 million, representing more than a twofold increase in fuel expenditure alone.
Beyond the fuel, the financial overhead is further compounded by the Suez Canal's steep transit fees, which add another estimated $1 million per trip. For a nation that exported an average of 7 million barrels of oil per day prior to the current conflict, these cumulative costs represent a significant blow to the efficiency of its export economy. Market analysts, including those from Goldman Sachs, have warned that if these disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz persist, the resulting supply chain friction could drive Brent crude prices beyond the $120 per barrel threshold.
### Technical Constraints and Infrastructure Workarounds
Adding to the complexity are the physical limitations of the Suez Canal. Due to depth constraints, many of the world's largest tankers (VLCCs) cannot transit the canal at full capacity. To navigate the waterway, these massive vessels must either carry half-loads or engage in complex reloading processes after entering the Mediterranean.
To mitigate these bottlenecks, Saudi Arabia may rely more heavily on the Sumed pipeline. This 320-kilometer infrastructure project connects the port of Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea to Sidi Kerir on the Mediterranean, effectively bypassing the canal's locks.
